10/7 - Short day (well sorta kinda)

First of all – we wanted to say what a wonderful posting Kristi did about the stem cell collection and the picture.  She did a wonderful job of explaining the process and I know it makes it easier for everyone to understand what exactly is going on.  AWESOME JOB DAUGHTER JJ
Had 2:00 appointment over at JH – blood work to be done.  Don was off yesterday so nothing was scheduled. Our Nurse for the day was Sandra Dee but Nurse Brenda filled in for her for a bit and took his vitals and 12 vials of blood.  Seems like an awful lot to me but they do counts for everything so it’s necessary.  She also changed his dressing and put a type on that was better for sensitive skin.  He has just been itching a lot since he first had the catheter put in and the type of dressing that we have been using so he was relieved to get a different type.  This one will be good for 7 days unless there is any drainage – hope not.  I love it when they do it! Nurse said we would have to wait for blood work and in the meantime and wait for the doctor to come.  We never saw a doctor but did see Nurse Practitioner Mindy.  She asked Don the normal questions – how he was feeling?  Any pain? How was he sleeping?  Few others.
4:00 – Still waiting for blood results L
4:30 – Still waiting but Nurse Amy did flush the catheter – because of blood taken earlier.
We did have some results but they were waiting on the Magnesium and Potassium because if the results had been low Don would have had an infusion of Magnesium and we would have gotten a prescription for Potassium.
5:15 – STILL waiting LL - our Nurse Sandra Dee did call twice to find out what was going on.  Last time she called they said it would be another 20-30 mins.  She said for us to go and she would call us when the results came in.  We left to go back to apartment and she called at 5:40 to say the results were in and the counts were fine for both.  Thanks goodness!!!!!
We did find out the collection process of the stem cells was very successful.  They only need 5 million but they collected 36.4 million – dang that’s a lot!!  We just wish they could use what they need and save the others in case Don would need another transplant but this is something Johns Hopkins does not do so there will be no saving, unfortunately.
Our next trip isn’t until Sunday – this is when Don is given the high dose of chemo and he returns again on Monday for another round.  The Nurse indicated Don would get the transplant on Tuesday but that was never verified with anyone so we really do not know right now.
That’s it for today everyone!
Until tomorrow……
Love you all!
Don & Muffin
